Introducing the Brian Clough FIFA Challenge!

It seems fitting to post a video about the man who game Nottingham Forest their best nights ever, on the same day they face their most important game for over 20 years.

With forest looking to get back to the premier league in 2022, we’ll be instead looking back at Brian Clough’s success back in the 1970s, with rivals Derby County, and the 1980s and 90s with Nottingham Forest, and i’ll be giving you the challenge to try to go one better than one of the greatest managers of all time.

I’ve split Cloughs biggest 3 achievements into 3 levels of challenge.

The first is the easiest, but its still a good long term save. You’ll be taking over one of Forest or Derby with the goal of winning 2 European Cups. You could also play out alternate history by taking over Hartlepool, Brighton or Leeds, with the latter being a very controversial pick, to try to do the exact same thing.

Clough was successful in almost all of his champions league appearances. The first was a Semi Final run with Derby, with a very suspicious loss to Juventus in the last 4. Next was an unsurprising defeat to Real Madrid in the 1975 Second Round.

Of course his next two appearances are his most famous, taking an unfancied Nottingham Forest to beat holders and favourites Liverpool in the very first round, before AEK, Grasshopper, Koln and Malmo to win the 1979 tournament, before beating East German champions Dynamo Berlin, Dutch champions Ajax and West German champions Hamburg to win a second Champions League in a row.

You might have it a bit tougher, with more strong teams being thrown into the newer UCL system, but you’ll have to win two to complete the first level of this challenge.

As if winning two UCL’s with Forest wasnt enough, Clough always provided instant success. Both of his trips to the champions league were within 5 years of taking over second division clubs.

This means you’ll have until the start of the 2026/27 season to get whichever team you pick into the semi final of the champions league, if you want the challenge to be a bit harder.

With your two hard challenges, if you want to make it even harder, you can restrict your maximum signing to only 1 million pounds. This was the most expensive player in Cloughs European Champions at nottingham forest, the then most expensive player in the UK, striker Trevor Francis.
