In this episode, Sal Mercogliano - maritime historian at Campbell University and former merchant mariner - discusses the Top 5 maritime stories as of December 19, 2022. The first story looks at the sinking of a Royal Thai Navy frigate HTMS Sukhothai after an engine malfunction flooded the ship and the search for 33 lost crewmembers. Second, the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach decide to end their threatened Hyper-Demurrage charges now that the ports are seeking the return of business as the ports fall below pre-COVID levels. Third, Europe is on track to receive LNG in record volumes and shore establishments in Germany are in full development. Fourth, the Australian government investigated the loss of containers off APL England and found faulty equipment and failure to divert due to weather as the chief cause. Finally, Bloomberg undertook a massive features into the smuggling of 20 tons of cocaine on board MSC Guyane and what role the shipping company played in the event.
